Advanced Long-term Space Applications of Terrestrial Video-based Surveillance Systems

Space exploration has been carried on by means of small space vehicles and small manned space stations. In order to realize more complex space stations, with the presence of a greater number of vehicles and persons, it is necessary to consider the installation of systems for providing the safety of people and machines in the space environment, e.g. by avoiding collision between vehicles or by preventing vandalism. Prototypical video-based surveillance systems have been developed for surveying both indoor and outdoor environments; in order to apply these systems in space environments, it is necessary to evaluate which performances can be expected under different environmental conditions; this will be possible after a standardization step of performance measures for complex image processing algorithms. In this paper we propose a quantitative methodology for evaluating performances of image processing modules used in a videobased surveillance system; the proposed methodology can be used for future standardization of procedures for evaluating complex systems.
